The Athletes For Animals mission is to raise funding and awareness for Humane Education programs that connect kids with animals to teach kindness, compassion and respect for all living beings.

How It Works:

Pet lovers visit www.athletesforanimals.com to enter a FREE DRAWING for autographed items donated by professional athletes. For each FREE entry, the program sponsors donate $1 to charities that teach kids to value and respect animals.

The program is starting in Washington, D.C. with the Washington Redskins' Chris Cooley, the Washington Capitals' Shaone Morrisonn, DC United's Clyde Simms and the Washington Mystics' Nakia Sanford. The charitable beneficiaries are The Washington Animal Rescue League and The Washington Humane Society. Nationwide expansion is coming soon.

In addition to donating autographed items, participating athletes are visiting schools in underserved areas where kids are more likely to be exposed to, and influenced by, animal abuse.

See the Most Shocking Photos of Elephant Abuse in the Circus Ever Released

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

At Ringling Bros. circus, still-nursing 18- to 24-month-old baby elephants are captured rodeo-style, roped around all four legs, tethered neck-to-neck to an "anchor" elephant, and dragged away from their mothers. From this point forward in their lives, every movement, every instinct, and every natural form of behavior is subjected to suppression and discipline at the whim of the trainer.

The baby elephants are restrained with ropes or chains on a concrete floor in a barn for up to 23 hours a day in order to break their spirits. They are never allowed to play outdoors and are denied all that is natural and important to them.

Never-before-seen photographs given to PETA by a whistleblower reveal that this is the real way that they teach baby elephants to learn circus "tricks"--through cruelty.

Bound with ropes in the practice area, baby elephants are wrestled by several adult men—some using sharp bullhooks and electric shock prods—slammed to the ground, and aggressively pushed and pulled into positions that will eventually be incorporated into a circus routine. The frightened baby elephants cry out, but according to the whistleblower, Ringling uses loud music to muffle their screams.

The whistleblower is former elephant handler Sam Haddock, who worked at Ringling's Center for Elephant Conservation, a breeding and training center, in Polk City, Florida, off and on between 1997 and 2005. His late wife had urged him to do the right thing and expose Ringling's torturous treatment of elephants at its so-called "conservation center." A short time after providing PETA with dozens of disturbing images and a statement detailing how baby elephants are tied up and their spirits are broken, Mr. Haddock, too, passed away following a sudden illness.

Please explore the photos that Mr. and Mrs. Haddock wanted the world to see and share them with everyone you know through e-mail or on sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Please remember these images the next time the circus comes to town, and don't attend, as that is the best way to stop the abuse of these baby elephants. Thank you.

Very truly yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

Helicopter Squad Guns Down Idaho Wolf Pack

More horrible news from Idaho: most members of Idaho’s Basin Butte wolf pack have been mercilessly slaughtered from a helicopter. This deadly action is a brutal escalation of the state’s war on wolves.

Please make an emergency donation today to support our legal, media, and national grassroots campaign to save the remaining wolves in Idaho and the Greater Yellowstone region.

As most of us prepared for the Thanksgiving holiday, sharpshooters firing from a helicopter carried out the death sentence of the Basin Butte pack -- executing most members of the wolf family, including several 7-8 month-old pups.

This terrible news comes on the heels of Idaho extending its awful wolf hunt into the critical denning season -- even as the state is over half way to its deadly goal of killing 220 wolves.

Pregnant wolf mothers -- typically carrying up to six pups -- can now be targeted for death and any surviving newborn pups could face a slow death by starvation as key family members are killed.

Please donate now to help save the lives of wolves in Idaho and the Greater Yellowstone region.

For more than 35 years, Defenders has taken the lead to bring back wolves in the Greater Yellowstone and northern Rockies region. No other organization has a longer history -- or as much success -- in safeguarding these magnificent animals.

Right now we're...

* Reaching millions with our powerful video ad playing in Times Square;
* Demanding that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar immediately restore crucial federal protections for these wolves -- backed by nearly 100,000 signatures from caring supporters like you;
* Being featured in influential media like the New York Times, Focus Earth with ABC’s Bob Woodruff and regional news outlets like the Idaho Statesman; and
* Fighting in court where a federal judge indicated that Defenders is likely to win our case to restore protections for wolves in the region.

Unfortunately, every day the danger to these wolves is increasing. The Idaho Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife are holding lethal “derbies” to kill as many wolves and other animals as possible.[4]

Now, state officials have launched an aerial assault on wolves, escalating efforts to kill these amazing animals.

Please donate today to help us save the lives of wolves in Idaho and the northern Rockies and protect the wildlife that you and I cherish.

Thanks for all you do to protect our wildlife and wild places.

Sincerely,

Rodger Schlickeisen
President

Success! National 2009 ARAN Rally for Animal Rights Generates Huge Support

Dear ARAN Members & Supporters,

Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) staged our third rally in Dublin on December 6th, 2009. Despite the torrential rain that poured heavily across the country, which deterred many hundreds of supporters that planned on coming - from coming along. In Dublin, however, the weather could not have being better – for what many would agree was the most successful and well attended rally for animals ever. The weather in Dublin was a summer’s day – the only city in Ireland to have good weather this weekend! The sky was bright, clear blue and the sun glared down on top of us. Early that morning some radio stations were carrying the story that hundreds were due to protest animal abuse in Dublin and that we did – it was upbeat, lively and most importantly peaceful, whilst sending a strong message.

Although the animal rights movement in Ireland is still young, it is growing. People began gathering shortly after one pm at the Garden of Remembrance - at one stage it seemed that there was only a handful of people or no more than 100 attending - until shortly after crowds of people began gathering. As we made our way onto O’Connell Street, the rally line started filling out and thickening. Passing traffic, tourist busses and onlookers cheered, beeped horns and waved in support - whilst a chant ‘There’s No Excuse for Animal Abuse’ and ‘There’s No Excuse for Animal Abuse, Animals Have Rights’ kept the march going. There were children of a few months of age in attendance, up to supporters in their 70’s – it was a huge spectacle of old and young coming together as one voice to call for the war on animals to end and to establish rights for them. ARAN would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to many of Ireland’s other animal protection groups and their supporters for their attendance and vital support - groups such as, ICABS, CIWF, IAVS, Animal Care Society, Mayo SPCA, Limerick Animal Welfare, LSPCA, Galway SPCA, Clare Animal Welfare, Second Chance Animal Rescue, Northern Ireland Animal Rights Defenders, Ash Animal Rescue, Galway Vegetarian Group, Vegetarian Society of Ireland, Supreme Master Television, Rainbow Re-homing Centre, Dogs in Distress and many more. We thank those that could not attend but helped to spread the word and highlight the event on their website, through facebook, distribute leaflets, put up posters ect. As the rally proceeded through O’Connell Street, it started building up in numbers as we made our way onto Dame Street and up George’s street where we went onto the Camden Court hotel to hear speeches from our friends at the Vegetarian Society of Ireland, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Animal Consultants and Animals Count. Other speeches were also given by CIWF, ICABS and Trish Forde Brennan from the Limerick Greens who brought us up to date with the animal welfare bill plus many more. Recording the event were a camera crew from Supreme Master Television International who are a group that focus much of their work on promoting vegetarian, veganism and climate change, this international television station has interviewed most of the world’s top animal protection groups and campaigners, so ARAN was grateful for them choosing to support our work too. The hotel room where speeches took place was filled out for the most part.

Press coverage for the event was also positive. Great coverage in the Irish Independent, Irish Times, Irish Daily Mirror, Irish Sun, Irish Examiner, Eircom.net, Breakingnews.ie and various online sites, plus radio stations doing interviews the following day for an update on the march and animal welfare bill. Letters of support also came in from groups such as the BUAV, PETA, Animal Defenders International, National Anti-vivisection Society, Advocates for Animals, Animal Aid, Viva and of course Uncaged who organize International Day for Animal Rights which ARAN’s rally was also supporting.

Once again for those that could not make it, we’ve captured some interesting video footage for you to see. Please click here and be sure to send this video onto all your friends and family, and urge them to get involved in ARAN’s work to help animals. ARAN would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended the rally - the groups that supported the event, the people that could not make it due to weather or recession problems but support ARAN through various other ways, and of course to the army of loyal ARAN supporters who kindly help to make all our work happen. We would also like to give a huge thanks to cruelty free company LUSH for their unwavering support of ARAN and to all their staff and shops in Ireland supporting our work. LUSH are a strict ethical company that are still against animal testing and most of their products are either vegetarian or vegan.

As we go into 2010, ARAN promises the animals that we’ll re-double our efforts to stop their suffering and abuse and we hope that you’ll stand by us as we go into another year fighting to creature positive and meaningful change for the animals, you are all they have.

Wishing you all a great compassionate Christmas and an action packed New Year for the animals.

From us all here at Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN)

Bring Back the Twilight Wolves

Wolves play a big part in the new movie Twilight: New Moon, but these magnificent animals have played an even bigger role in Washington state, including the Olympic Peninsula coastal range -- the real-world setting of the Twilight movies and books. We can help restore wolves to Washington! I signed a petition to the Washington governor urging her to support wolf restoration, and I hope you will too.

Stop the Calderon Dolphin Slaughter in Denmark

Petition Sponsored by: Carla Valdivia

Every year, in Denmark, specifically the Faroe Islands, innocent and helpless Calderon Dolphins are slaughtered brutally by the Danes. Why you may ask, simply because. A pointless and stupid right of passage to manhood.
What points is there in killing another living being just to prove you have "evolved", you have transcended. There is simply no need.
This poor dolphins are stabbed a number of times, but as if that weren't enough, they bleed to death, probably in excruciating pain while the whole town watches.
Needles to say, that killing a defenceless animal is no prove of anybody's manhood.
So, I urge, as I am sure many more have, to stop this nonsense. And take action.
Never, ever, killing an other creature, another living being, with whom we share this world, has done any good, to anyone. So let's stop it.

Kittens, Monkeys, Mice, and Dogs Suffer and Die in University Labs

For most people, the sale of cats and dogs from animal shelters for use in laboratories seems like a barbaric practice from the distant past—as it should be. Shockingly, in some states homeless animals are still purchased from shelters and then used in cruel and painful experiments, even at seemingly reputable universities. PETA's newest investigation goes undercover inside the University of Utah to reveal the school's shocking experiments on homeless animals.

One of these animals was an affectionate orange tabby cat named Robert. University of Utah experimenters drilled a hole into his skull and implanted electrodes in his brain in order to run an electric current through it. The university also paid a shelter $20 for a skinny black-and-tan German shepherd mix named Lady. Lady's neck was cut open and a medical device was implanted as part of a cruel heart experiment. Kittens born to a cat purchased from a shelter had chemicals injected into their brains. All the kittens died during the course of the experiment.

In other experiments, mice were given enormous tumors and monkeys had holes drilled into their skulls. These monkeys were also kept constantly thirsty so that they would "cooperate" with experimenters in exchange for a few drops of water. These are just a few examples of the many instances of cruelty documented by PETA's undercover investigator at the University of Utah.

PETA is taking swift action by filing formal complaints with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Institutes of Health alleging violations of federal law and noncompliance with federally mandated guidelines. We are also filing a criminal complaint with local law-enforcement officials. However, as long as any university or company continues to blind, poison, maim, torture, and kill animals, our job isn't done. PETA—and supporters like you—are often the only hope for these animals.

Please be a voice for the animals suffering in laboratories at the University of Utah. Urge the university to end the use of animals from shelters in its laboratories.

Thank you for speaking out for animals in laboratories. Your voice makes a difference to the countless helpless animals who have no voice.

Very truly yours,

Kathy Guillermo
Vice President
Laboratory Investigations Department

Why Your Attendance at ARAN's Rally is Imperative!

Dear ARAN Members & Supporters

November is here and we’re just weeks from the biggest most important event for animals in Ireland ever!

Never before have we issued such an urgent call for nationwide unity to stop cruelty to animals in this country. This year we’ve got a genuine opportunity to get long-lasting, historic protection for animals and to compel industry and society to respect and treat animals fairly. For many people reading this appeal today the issue breaks your heart – but on December 6th we have one last opportunity to send a powerful message to decision makers at government level that the new and revised animal welfare bill due to be released in 2010 must contain such strong measures to protect animals and penalize those that seek to profit and get sick kicks from them.

All to often the cruelty can be unbearable, but for as long we just sit back and do nothing but pick up the pieces of society’s treatment of animals or just wish it would stop then we’ll never stop this injustice of animal abuse. So just wishing it will go away - won’t make it go away – but your actions can! It’s got to stop, but we can’t overly state how important individual action truly is. There is so much at stake, exploitive greyhound racing, cruel fur farming, animal experiments for cosmetics testing ect, barbaric bloodsports, live animal exports, dog & cat mistreatment, dog pound killings, puppy farms and dog fighting - the list is endless. Our rally will highlight all these issues and more. Canada’s cruel baby seal hunt will also be high on the agenda and we’ll have big banners and placards calling for this commercial slaughter to end, and it is in sight!

Our upcoming march and rally will see people from across the nation wake up bright and early on the Sunday morning to be in Dublin from cities across Ireland including Limerick, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Donegal, Waterford, Wexford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Kildare and of course all over Northern Ireland to join our event that will also include several inspiring campaigners speak about their work for animals. For many people attending it will be their first time attending an event to help animals so it’s important that you pencil in December 6th to be with us in Dublin for the rally - it’s a once off event to raise vital awareness so we’re desperately asking that you be with us as it won’t happen for many more years. If need be take a day off work, a couple of hours even – do whatever is necessary and please whatever you do....don’t leave it to someone else, those poor animals need you.

Details of the event are as follows:-

Date: Sunday, December 6th 2009

Time: 1.30pm Sharp

Place: Garden of Remembrance, O’Connell Street, Dublin (Top of O’Connell Street on left hand side)

Contact: John Carmody or Siobhan Higgins 087-2391646

In the meantime please do your part to help make this event a huge success. We have leaflets and posters that we can send you to distribute to people and create awareness of the rally plus it will help spotlight cruelty to animals and help educate, contact us directly if you’d like us to mail these to you. You also got a perfect opportunity to invite your friends, family and co-workers along too – please remember most people will support the cruelty to animals cause especially by attending this exciting event so animals are counting on you to tell everyone! Please highlight the event on your Facebook, Bebo or MySpace account and why not text everyone in your phone book with the details? Contact us if you need the wording for such a text.

Above all, the single most important thing to do is please don’t ignore this email - do not let it to someone else. If we are to unite for this rally then it’s imperative we all join hands and have one huge event in Dublin, for far to long animals have been forgotten.

Thank you so much for caring and I hope that on December 6th you’ll be with us, hail, rain or snow!

John Carmody

Founder of ARAN www.ARAN.ie

‘Fighting animal abuse across Ireland’

Ps, have you seeing our new YouTube video highlighting our rally? If not click here and be sure to forward it on far and wide and spread the word – we’re going to have one of the best events for animals Ireland has ever seeing, so get ready!

Ballyglunin farmer banned from keeping animals after cruelty conviction

Tuam Herald Thursday, October 29, 2009

Animal cruelty organisation welcomes judge's verdict

A BALLYGLUNIN farmer who left his dog untreated with a two kilo cancerous tumour hanging from its abdomen was banned from holding any animals in the future when he was convicted on a cruelty charge at Tuam District Court on Tuesday.

Before the Court was Mar-tin Forde of Lissaniska, Ballyglunin who was described as a farmer in Court. He was fined and ordered not to keep animals again.

Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) issued a statement following the verdict and the Judge's ruling expressing their delight at the outcome and hoped it would serve as a warning to others who are mistreating animals.

At Tuam Court GSPCA official Janine Zanon presented photographic evidence depicting the distressed state the dog was in before it had to be put down by Tuam Veteri-nary Surgeon Tom Rennick.

Judge Geoffrey Browne on viewing the evidence said: "The poor dog, it must have been in agony." He added that there was no excuse for leaving an animal in such distress and it must have been obvious that it was ill for a considerable time.

He was told that the tumour was the size of a melon and was estimated to weight approximately two kilos (4.51b).

Ms Zanon gave details of the condition she found the dog in when she visited Forde's farm on February 27 last.

The animal could barely walk when she arrived at Forde's home and she could see it was in severe pain. She put it in her van and brought it to the vet in Tuam. Along the way she could hear it crying in pain and when she removed it there was evidence of discharge from the tumour left in her vehicle.

Tom Rennick estimated that the tumour could have been growing for up to two years. It was in such extreme pain when brought to the surgery that there was no option but to put it down.

Forde's defence solicitor told the Court that her client was very apologetic for what had happened.

He had twice tried to get a vet to come out and treat the dog but had failed. It was stated that. Forde himself had suffered ill health in recent times.
Judge Browne convicted Forde of animal cruelty and imposed a fine of €750 and ordered him to pay €60 in veterinary expenses,

He also ordered that Forde be banned from keeping any animals.
GSPCA Spokesperson Margaret O'Sullivan told The Herald that the animal involved had endured unimaginable suffering.

"This is the first in my memory that someone has been banned for life from owning a dog. Hopefully this will be a lesson for those who don't look after their animals. We will come after you and there will be prosecutions," she warned.

"We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of this case and we thank the Judge for his comments and the way he dealt with the matter," added Margaret O'Sullivan.

Please be warned, these photographs are VERY, VERY distressing to look at.

Place: Garden of Remembrance, O'Connell Street, Dublin
Contact: John Carmody arancampaigns@eircom.net or call 0872391646 www.ARAN.ie

As always this event is not just about Animal Rights Action Network, but also local animal rescue groups like MSPCA and your work for animals too so please do your part to make this event a huge success for the animals. We've got a great chance to get people out and it would be great if you can do everything you can during the month of November to highlight the issue with your supporters who will be delighted to hear your getting involved - one thing iv learned through ARAN and dealing with our supporters is that they like to see the group getting active and raising awareness. Please if you can put a nice mention prominently at the top of your website with all the details, maybe put a picture of an abused animal too or even a cute animals - explain also about the purpose of this peaceful event and why it's important that your supporters attend, if possible please also call your supporters who do not have email or even write to the ones that like to keep in touch by snail mail, it would also be great to send out an email alert before the event and maybe a few days just before the event also to remind them, but putting it on the website will be a huge help.

Regarding the route, we are still working on this but we're trying to extend the route so ill have more details of this nearer the time. Here at Animal Rights Action Network we'll be working hard to get as much of our members and supporters out as is possible and publicizing this across the country but mainly in Dublin. We've got a leaflet run of 4,000, a new banner printed for the leading of the rally plus over 200 high quality posters which we'll be mainly to people in Dublin.

It all looks like fun and the Gardai have confirmed once again to us that they are more than happy to work with us which is good news, I want to invite them too!! Thanks for all that you do and please do whatever you can to get all your supporters out on the day and let's have one of the best events for animals the country has ever seeing and together we will make a big difference.

Here is TV news footage from last year check it out

01. Ask Google to stop advertising foxhunting in Ireland
______________________________________

The Irish Council Against Blood Sports has appealed to Google to stop advertising foxhunting holidays in Ireland. A "Google Ad" invites readers to "experience the thrill of the chase". Please join our appeal to Google - respond to our action alert now.

ACTION ALERT

Ask Google to stop displaying ads for foxhunting. Use the sample letter below or compose your own original letter. Thank you.

Mr John Herlihy
Vice President, Global Ad Operations
Google Dublin,
Google Ireland Ltd.
Gordon House
Barrow Street, Dublin 4
Tel: +353 (1) 436 1000
Fax: +353 (1) 436 1001

Dear Mr Herlihy,

I am horrified to see that one of the ads being displayed in "Ads by Google" is for the cruel and barbaric activity of foxhunting. ["Fox hunting in Ireland - Experience the thrill of the chase"]

I call on your company to immediately remove this ad on the grounds that it is promoting one of Ireland's worst acts of animal cruelty.

In foxhunting across Ireland, foxes are disturbed from their habitats, chased to exhaustion and torn apart by a pack of trained hounds. Foxes that manage to escape underground are dug out with spades while terriers are sent down to viciously attack them.

I invite you to view this short Irish Council Against Blood Sports campaign video which shows just some of the suffering involved: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x54eit_ban-foxhunting-in-ireland_animals

I trust that after viewing this, Google will agree that foxhunting is disgusting animal cruelty. I hope, therefore, that you will act now to remove this ad and stop publicising foxhunting.

Thank you

Yours faithfully
[Name/Country]

02. Carted deerhunt ban in sight
______________________________________

ICABS welcomes the ban on deer hunting secured by the Green Party following their negotiations with Fianna Fail on a new programme for government at the weekend. This is indeed an historic milestone in our campaign to bring to an end the hunting of animals with dogs in Ireland.

Let us hope that this announced ban on the carted deer hunt soon becomes a reality and that this abhorrent and abusive past-time which has been engaged in by the Ward Union hunt club for over 150 years, will at last be consigned to the dustbin of history where it belongs.

Sadly, and most disappointingly, there will be no respite for hares and foxes, with Fianna Fail refusing to countenance a ban on hare coursing and foxhunting.

Action Alert

Express your thanks to Green Party leader, Minister John Gormley, and urge him and his party to do whatever it takes to also bring hare coursing and foxhunting to an end.

03. The animals get my vote
______________________________________

Please send a copy of our new "The Animals Get My Vote" poster to all your local politicians to tell them that their attitude towards animals and their commitment to bringing animal cruelty to an end will be a major factor in your voting decision.

Why not also arrange a meeting with your local politicians to discuss your concerns about animal cruelty and encourage them to take action
