In
Memory
It
is with deep sadness that we heard of the passing of our
dear friend and life long member of the GSPCA veterinary
surgeon Michael Brennan. Michael has been a member from
the early days, and served for several years on the committee
before becoming our veterinary advisor, as well as advisor
for all things GSPCA.
His love of animals in his care was truly devotion and indeed
the care he took of our animals was always first class.
It didn't matter to Michael that it was picked up from the
road side, it always got the Michael treatment.
His 'bedside' manner was unique, he might recite a bit of
poetry or tell a little story thus putting animal and human
at ease. He was a great man for information and if he did
not know he found out for you.
Michael was more than your vet, he was your friend and was
always there to steady you when you came in with your pet.
A quick word, gentle advice or just a good joke to lift
the spirits. He would always do everything in his power
to help your pet but yet if he thought the time was now,
he gently told you and gave you time to say good bye.
We
will
miss you Michael, but more so the animals will miss you.
One thing Michael we can guarantee is you never will be
forgotten as in life and now in death the stories you gave
us, the fun we had in your company the jokes, the slagging
will never be forgotten and will always be shared with those
lucky enough to know you.
To his family, his work colleagues, words can not express
what his loss is to you all.
As you loved to ease us with a bit of poetry, now we will
return the compliment and say a little bit of this poem
for you
For
All the One's I have Loved and Lost
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that
blow.
I am the diamond glint on the snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
Good bye old friend, rest well

dogs foster two kittens
Meet
Spiky and Yoki, 2 dogs adopted by Daniella from the GSPCA Sanctuary,
who became foster parents to 2 kittens. The kittens were abanded
in a box and when Daniella took them home 'her girls' took over
and became mums to Salem and Sophie. They cleaned them, played
with them, slept with them put manners on them when they misbehaved.
They reared them as well as any mama cat would do. Now they are
well and fit enough to be homed. Job well done Spiky and Yoki.
This is Bonnie,
she's a 4 yr old Fox Terrier cross and she's a naturally gifted
musician! If your pet has a talent or is just cute, why not show
us on our Facebook
group!!
Galway
bay fm visit gspca headquarters
We got the
call the engineer visited us, it was all systems go, Galway
bay fm were coming in the morning to present the Keith Finnegan
show from our shop. Keith was on a much needed break so Gerry
Murphy stood in.
Having never met Gerry before, it was indeed a please to meet
up with him. The show started and what an experience to see
how a programme is put together and how everything fits in and
how everything is timed.
For the show we had Donnacha from Galway volunteer centre talking
about the work they do. Vinny from Charlie Byrnes book shop
called in to tell us they are 25 years in business. A garda
from Mill St, one of the lads from FAS these were just a few
of the people popping in. In between all that both Helen and
myself spoke of the animals, work, the worries, the abuse we
face daily trying to keep our organization going. As Helen said
apart from the FAS workers the rest is all volunteer including
the committee who put in a 7 day week while holding down jobs
as well.
To finish off Bernie Ní Fharratha from the Connacht tribune
joined Gerry with the sentinel news and the bit of craíc
as well. What a morning we totally enjoyed having everyone visit
and say a big thank to Gerry and Fionnuala for making it happen
and invite them to come back soon.

Review
by GaelMovies, A wee blog about Scottish and Irish cinema.
SANCTUARY by Lorraine O'Hanlon (pictured below with our
very own Tara!) is a touching look at the work of an Irish
animal sanctuary which unfortunately isn't full of happy
news. Hopefully a wider audience awaits this one as it's
the sort of thing that really needs to be seen to drum up
support for a worthy cause. And I say that as someone who
certainly isn't an animal lover.
Each
day the people come and walk up and down looking at our dogs.
They watch the pups and the young dogs playing but walk by the
'old guy' sadly they don't know what they are missing by not looking.
Just because a dog has passed its first flush of youth should
not put you off homing one. Older dogs are wonderful they are
wiser, more secure, playful, house trained and yes full of energy.
They love to walk, run, play and most of all will happily sit
with you.
Mossie came to us in a terrible condition he was chained up and
had lost most of his teeth trying to chew the chain. He was a
mess and on top of that was totally afraid of the most common
things dogs take for granted, but Mossie was lucky as his special
angel spotted him on our web and gave him a second chance, but
most of all gave him something he never had A HOME. So please
read Sian's story of life with Mossie, and the next time you are
in our sanctuary or even thinking of getting a dog think of Mossie
and Sian. Enjoy this
wonderful story and look at the video.

Meet Roxy a
beautiful gentle lady who is just a year old. Sadly Roxy was the
victim of a hit and run and suffered serious leg injuries to her
shoulder and elbow. She needed very extensive surgery to save
her leg which thankfully was successful. The surgery was very
expensive and with follow up care will cost us in the region of
€2000. As our funds are low, if anyone can help us in donating
towards 'Roxy's fund' please do. We will be updating her recovery
as we go along.
To all who enquired and donated to Roxy, here
are some new photos. The plaster is off and the recovery is
slow but she is getting there.
If
you wish to donate you can use the following methods

EXPERIENCE
The Galway
SPCA are delighted to be able to offer students in Secondary Schools
work placements as part of their Transition Year. Unfortunately
we can only take students for placements of at least one week.
We advise all students who are interested to apply as soon as
possible for the coming academic year.
If
you are interested in applying for a placement, please contact
us at gspca@eircom.net or
ring 091 563631.
Unfortunately
we cannot take students that suffer from animal hair allergies
as the placement requires
working in confined spaces with multiple dogs and cats.
PETPEEVES
Read Galway
SPCA's weekly columns, Paws 4 Thought in the Galway Advertiser,
and Pet Tails in the Tuam Herald where we promote responsible
pet ownership and try to reduce cruelty to animals. Each week
we will put together questions from the public on animal welfare.
These questions will cover all animals' . It the little things
we have to do that makes the big difference in our pets life's
like vaccinations,worming, de-fleaing,neutering, proper diet,
and exercise that make life so much easier for your pet and you.
You
can help us to make Galway a better place for all the animals
living here.
By leaving
a donation in your will to the GSPCA,
you will be providing the much-needed financial support we need
to continue our vital work in the city and county. It is something
that everyone can do but please remember that it is vital you
put GSPCA or GALWAY
SPCA otherwise we won't get a penny of it..
