Sharon & Andrew PhilbeyThe GSPCA on behalf of all our animals wish to to say a big big thank you to Andrew and Sharon Philbey who made a donation celebratiing their wedding to us. We are deligted that they thought of us and their donation is going towards the new cattery fund. Both Andrew and Sharon are big animals lovers and what a way to celebrate their wedding. Any other couples wishing to follow Andrew and Sharons example please contact us by phone or email. Again many thanks Andrew and Sharon and we all wish you both years of happiness and health and do call in when next you are in Galway.

We are living in London, but my parents live in Galway and I lived there for 10 years, attending NIG Galway for 4 of them.
We got married in the Chapel of St. Columbanus on the campus on 12 May this year, the reception was at Glenlo Abbey. We wanted to donate some money to charity, one being a local one.
As we are both big animal lovers, we chose the GSPCA. We also donated to the World Land Trust.

We hope this small amount helps a bit with the Cattery, best of luck with everything.

Sharon & Andrew Philbey

Claire and Jasper
The stories every week in the Galway Advertiser are really heartbreaking, I wish I could take home all the animals but unfortunately I can't! so I decided to do the Future Streets of Galway Road Race to raise awareness of the GSPCA and also to help raise money that's badly needed for the care of the animals already at the sanctuary .

With the Dublin city marathon coming up , can you run for the GSPCA contact 091 563631 or gspca@eircom.net

Many thanks to Claire and of course Jasper for raising much needed funds for our new cattery in Heathlawn , which we hope to start work on in the next few months. Claire said Jasper enjoyed the stroll and the scenery .

Sheba took her duties seriously

Sheba was one of four puppies left at the gate of my sister¹s boarding kennels. She was the runt of the litter and we decided to keep her. She grew up with my children and they couldn¹t go anywhere without her following.

My parents had a bach at Tinopai and the kids loved to go swimming whenever they could. As they splashed around with their armbands and kickboards, Sheba would be paddling around and looking after her brood. But once she¹d had enough, everyone had to get out of the water.

First she¹d take one kickboard to shore, using her mouth. She¹d swim out for the next, much to the kids¹ disgust as by then they knew what was in store. She would swim out, grab hold of an armband and, as it deflated, proceed to tow the disgruntled child ashore. With the child safely on the beach, she would head out to retrieve the other child, who by this time was trying desperately to get ashore before she too had only one armband.

Another time, the kids were playing at the neighbours¹ house. I called them to come home for their bath and dinner. Just as they were getting into the bath we heard a terrible noise coming from the driveway. We looked out to see Sheba with the handle of a plastic ride-on motorbike in her mouth, pulling the bike home. Once in the gate she dropped it and turned smartly back up the road to get the other bike.

The kids are adults now. They tell me that Sheba should have been named ŒMum¹.

Not one but three goodnight kisses

I had a rescued Border collie named Jess who managed to get three kisses every night.

She was supposed to spend the nights in her bed in the kitchen. Each evening, as I tidied up the room and prepared to turn out the light, I'd find her already curled up in her bed. The routine was that I'd kneel down and give her a pat and kiss the top of her head, saying, 'Night night, sleep tight.' Then I'd go through to the sitting room and plump up the cushions on the sofa and prepare to switch out those lights.

Without fail, I'd find a Border collie curled up in the armchair by the door, pretending to be asleep. I would say, 'Good heavens, I seem to have a second collie', and once again I would kneel down, pat and kiss the top of her head and say, 'Good night, sleep tight.'

Then upstairs I'd go, first into the bathroom and then along the corridor into my bedroom where I'd turn on the light. Who would I find curled up on the bedside rug but a third collie! Once the same ritual had been played out, I would undress and get into bed, switching off the light. The only sound in the dark bedroom was my dear collie thumping her tail on the rug, obviously pleased with her play-acting. Once again she had managed to get three goodnight kisses instead of one, and I just knew she was smiling.
